Keyi Rubath was built by Late Chovvakkaran Valiya Purayil Mayin Kutty Keyi in 1870’s. He went for hajj Pilgrimage during that period. At that time there were no facilities in Mecca, for the pilgrims to do this hajj. Mecca as well as the whole Saudi Arabia was inhabited by poor people. It was not a rich country at that time.
Some royal families outside Saudi Arabia built Rubaths (choultries) for residing the pilgrims coming from their regions. The royal families of India and some rich people built such Rubaths in Mecca during 18th and 19th centuries. The famous rubaths built by Indians are Arcaud Rubath built by Arcaud Nawah, Hyderabad Rubath built by Hyderabad Nizan,Kashmir Rubath, Torigu Rubath etc.
Mayin Kutty Keyi built Keyi Rubath for the pilgrims coming from Malabar area. He built the rubath carrying wood and laterites from Malabar in Vessels through the sea route. He spent the whole construction costs from his own wealth.
In the mean time, during the last century for the expansion of the holy Masjid the Keyi Rubath was demolished by the Saudi Government and another building was given as Substitute. But again in 1960’s, the substitution building was also demolished and a compensation amount was fixed and the same has deposited with the Awqaf department. For about 4 decades the amount laid idle with the Saudi Awqaf.
Recently, the Saudi Government asked India Government to find out the legal heirs and inheritance of Mayin Kutty keyi. As this is not an ancestor property earned by Mayin Kutty Keyi, All the keyi families and their members are eligible to inherit the compensation amount.
Mayin kutty keyi married to Arrakal Royal Family of Kannur and he is alsoknown as Mayin Kutty Elaya. The members of Arrakal Families also have a claim in the compensation amount. Now, We The Key Rubath Action Committee are trying to utilize the amount for the benefits of the whole family members.
